Catalogue of Stationary Sundials in Austria
In 1991, the Austrian Astronomical Society published its first CATALOGUE OF STATIONARY
SUNDIALS IN AUSTRIA. The edition quickly sold out, and since 1993 an updated
second edition has been available.
After 10 years of work and with the
assistance of many sundial enthusiasts, the author, Karl Schwarzinger, imput the
location and the particulars of the sundials in a computerized data bank from
which this catalogue is based.
The catalogue lists 2220 stationary
sundials, approximately half of which are from this century. The other half were
constructed before 1900 - the oldest dating from the 13th century. These still
display the "temporary hours" or the hours of prayers. Many of the beautiful
sundials in this catalogue originate from the baroque period.
The
catalogue is not only for sundial enthusiasts but for anyone who is interested
in conserving culturally significant objects.
A number of modern
sundials were not constructed according to gnomonic principles. Nevertheless,
these sundials are included in the catalogue as many of them could be corrected
by either changing the dial-plate or the direction of the gnomon.
The
catalogue contains a register of sundials listed according to province, district
and community, an abstract on the history of sundials, an explanation regarding
the theory of sundials, as well as a directory of all the areas mentioned in the
catalogue.
The 144-page catalogue, containing 33 photographs of sundials
and 7 illustrations, is format 16,5 x 23,7 cm. It is only available in German.
The catalogue is out of print !
In 2001, it is planed that either
a pictorial reprint of the catalogue or a CD regarding sundials in Austria
will be issued. |
